John Basilone was a decorated U.S. Marine known for his extraordinary heroism during world war II earning the Medal of Honor for his actions on Guadalcanal and later being killed in action at Iwo Jima. He became a national hero after holding off Japanese forces with a machine gun for days on Guadalcanal, then later refused a stateside role to fight in the front lines again, demonstrating his dedication to his fellow Marines.
